There is a very good and efficient banking system in Germany. It is usually very easy to open a bank account in Germany where online banking is normally provided. All big banks have a branche or an headquarter in the city, including, the BW-Bank, Deutsche Bank, Hypovereinsbank (HVB) Dresdner Bank and Commerzbank. In addition there are Sparkassen (savings banks), State owned banks like LBBW in Baden- Württemberg and the Postbank (operated by the Post Office). There are other foreign banks operating in Germany including Citibank.

Opening an account is a fairly simple procedure. One needs to prove his identity along with passport. Some cash is necessary at the time of opening an account. If the initial money is transferred from another bank, it can take a couple of weeks for the amount to be credited to new account.

Bank will issue a Eurochequecard (EC). Once the account is opened. EC card can be used to get cash or statements around the clock from the ATM Machine( Geldautomat), and it is commonly accepted for payments at hotels, ticket offices, department stores and even supermarkets.

There are several alternate ways of making payments in Germany i.e.Transfer (Überweisung), Standing order (Dauerauftrag) and Direct debit (Lastschrift).

Several large banks in Stuttgart have English-speaking staff to assist and clarify financial matters. They are a good source for information on the services and goods offered by banks.
